PLAYLAND | ARTIST STATEMENT

My primal interest is to engage in deep personal reflection and to transform, visually, the subconscious in me and in my subjects. I want to convey and share the feelings, temperature, and atmosphere of each place and its people, to describe the air with light and the psyche with color and grain.

Inspired by Basho Matsuo’s poem, The Narrow Road to the Interior, Playland evokes the fragility and empathy for the people and places I wander across in the United States. I am inspired by the will, awe, desire, enlightenment, innocence, cruelty, and imminent danger in everyday life in the characters, moments, and places in Playland. With an alien’s eye, I observe and explore the American land as a massive stage in the theater of Playland, where both my soul and the American souls play.
